Personally I get a little annoyed by the Matt Cutts videos. While he does slip the occasional good tip, most of what he says is Google propaganda. He’s going to tell you exactly what is in Google’s best interest for you to know. He makes it sound as if every site could easily compete if they simply produce better content and play fair. As if that is such an easy thing to accomplish. He pretends as if other link building strategies don’t work or that you should avoid them for one reason or another. Unfortunately if you only follow Matt’s advice, you are at a serious disadvantage to other website owners/marketers.

A great lists. Some ideas were also new for me, but I miss one maybe important method. You can also write press-releses/articles describing the service or product you offer. Submit them to Online-PR portals or send them directly to journalists.

Some online PR portals allow links showing to your website and it is even better if a journalist picks up your story and talks about your service or product publishing a link to your website.

Link bait is still the best link building technique. It’s natural and G won’t penalize you for this. For other techniques, goodluck… 🙂

It is amusing that the person’s question asked for ways other than building great content. Then in the video Matt dedicates most of the time talking about building better content. Way to miss the question completely Matt.
Good advice from Matt Cutts, however being controversial can be very risky especially if your blog is recent and/or if you are new to the blogging scene. It might be perceived as you being desperately controversial to get links.
Also choose your target carefully, going after a blog /person who has a large following is a sure way to get that crowd angry
