If you want to call free to anywhere in the world, you use VoIP. In the VoIP app arena, you can safely say that Viber is one of the most popular apps. While it doesn’t have business VoIP features that can directly compete with leading VoIP providers like RingCentral, it’s still one of the best tools that you can use for personal communication.
Features that make Viber popular with mobile users are free calls and texts over 3G and Wi Fi; photo, video, and location sharing; push notifications to better ensure that you don’t miss any of those important calls; OS integration, so you can share videos and files directly from your gallery; and groups of up to 40 participants. Viber also syncs with your device’s mobile list, automatically detecting if your friends and family have Viber installed.
Recently, Viber made news when it updated and added more features, allowing it to go head-to-head with top VoIP competitor Skype.
Let’s examine its latest offerings:
Viber for Mac and Windows
Viber has been known mostly as a mobile application, releasing apps for BlackBerry, iOS, Android, Windows, Bada, and Symbian. However, it seems as if the VoIP service provider is getting more serious in competing against its rivals.
Recently, the company announced the release of Viber Desktop for Mac and PC, desktop tools that could integrate with your mobile apps.
This means that you can now seamlessly switch from your mobile to PC or Mac and vice versa when using Viber. Set up is simple and convenient, as users only need their user ID and phone number to sign in.
Transferring calls, deleting conversations, and syncing messages can also be easily done with a single tap or click.
Read CEO Talmon Marco’s statement on the new release:
“People spend a substantial amount of time on their smartphones.“However, a lot of that usage takes place at home or in the office, where they have laptops or desktops close by.
With Viber Desktop you always get to use the most convenient device. You can seamlessly switch devices while messaging and even transfer calls between your mobile and desktop.”
Doodle feature for Android
Three months after adding video-calling capabilities for Mac and Windows, Viber once again made headlines when it announced its new version 3.1 for Android.
Viber users can now get even more personal in sending messages to friends, as the app lets them add graffiti to their photos and create their own drawings from scratch.
Viber CEO Talmon Marco says that the new doodle feature will not only be fun for users, but will also make Viber a more useful communication tool.
Aside from these, Viber also announced minor updates for its Android app. Users can now see when their message has been viewed by the recipient. There’s also the complete redesign of the app’s Holo interface, added support for new languages, and new emoticons to choose from.
