Building Mini-Sites for Long-tail Keyword Phrases

You might not know it yet, but Mini-Sites are the key to expanding your online business, gaining more traffic, and having more conversions than ever. Once your main website starts ranking for whatever niche and main keyword phrases it is that are you trying to rank for, your next step is to expand your website in different areas and to take baby steps toward dominating the competition. There’s two different directions you could take to do so. To really become the authority, you should consider doing both of them. Either way, the objective is to start optimizing for long-tail keywords.

Add More Pages to Your Website

This goes without saying. Your at the point now where you have put in the work it takes to rank for your main desired keyword phrase for your website and to go forward, the first step is to start your research engine and start targeting many different long-tail keyword phrases that you think will convert for you. Your going to want to add a large amount of pages – hundreds if possible – and hiring professional content writers that are well accustomed with writing content for the internet would definitely be a step in the right direction. After you have taken this necessary step, it’s time to to start creating a funnel that will get you more traffic then you ever thought you could. This type of business model is a model that not as many webmasters pursue, and therefore you can sneak onto the radar for keyword phrases you thought were impossible to rank for – at least this easily.

Creating Mini-Sites

There is a certain power with owning exact-match domain names that will create opportunity for you in the online world that wouldn’t exist otherwise. Everyday, the domain name market gets smaller and smaller and acting on potential money making keyword phrases should be done whenever you have the gumption to do so. To start ranking for long-tail keyword phrases that otherwise would be impossible, you need to start investing in exact match domains for the targeted keyword phrases.

This is essential because Google puts so much weight into exact match domain names in terms of their ranking system. With an exact match domain name you can rank high for a keyword phrase without doing nearly as much work. This creates the opportunity to build many of them with, all with the same goal in mind – to funnel these searchers onto your money making pages. Mini-Sites don’t need nearly as much work put into them as your main site does, and they add a valuable extension to your online business. If you build enough of them, you can start dominating, not only just the top spots in the search engine, but pretty much WHOLE PAGES in the search engines.

Mini-Sites require only about 25-50 pages of content and whole lot less link building then your main site should require since the exact domain name match should carry so much weight. One of the great things about the link building approaches that you can take is that you can put all of your different Mini-Sites on different hosting accounts and servers so that you can form a link network where the links will pass value for all of your sites – and even link back and forth to and from your main site! Mini-Sites open up the door for very many different opportunities and will expand the reach of your business in ways that can only be done in this type of funneling system.

I work a lot with mini-sites for my affiliate marketing business. It depends on what keywords you are after, but in my experience, you can rank with far less pages than 25-50. I usually have a dozen pages or so on my mini-sites max. Again, it entirely depends on what competition there is for the keywords you are targeting. I find a lot of great ideas for domains and new sites using the Google Wonder Wheel tool as well. They have always had this feature, but it is has never displayed the data in such an impressive fashion. Great article and good post as always.

I agree, 12 pages should be enough for most mini sites. 25-50 pages is a bit overkill for a mini site. Then again, it does depend on competition and goals for the site.

I really want to get more niche sites up after I'm done with my writing projects - the ones that I've got up now are doing pretty awesome, nice bit of inspiration to keep at it :) It's insane how much potential is out there - every little item can become a niche site of its own; put some content up, affiliate and boom, sit back and work on the next.

Hi Philip, Of Corse is this a very good trick, the problem it cost a lot of money to have many site, but the biggest problem is content is king so you must update every site a couple a time every week with new pages, it takes time. Personally prefer I to have one site and do a very good SEO job with it inclusive the long tail with different keywords and links between the pages.
Philip October 20, 2010 - 8:16 am
Hey there, I agree, some sites don't need so many pages, 12 should do just fine - depending on the competition. Property Marbella - Content is king is true, which is why you are eliminating some of "contents kingdom domain" by using exact matches for long tail keywords (3-4 word phrases). That is exactly why you don't need to worry about updating content as much as you would normally have to and you can focus on other things like small scale link building plans.

Hey Phillip, Oh well, talking about keywords in a domain name, i feel bad about it. I wish i knew about SEO stuff (at least basic) before starting my blog. When i started my blog, i really had 0 knowledge with SEO stuff, including keywords. I did blog for my pleasure or hobbies, but then i learnt in blogging community to expand what i am doing, like, getting traffic and visitors, and even making money from it. From those stuff, i wish i did have another domain name with a keyword in it. Thanks for your great post above!

Well, long tail keywords are generally specific. This can be a real con in search marketing because specific keywords reflect a higher buying intent.

the key to success with minisites (or better - any website) is to choose good keyword. What i mean by 'good'? Keyword should be profitable and weak competition.

With the number of available domains its almost impossible to rank in the moving and storage industry. It seems like larger lead building companies have taken on all the good ones :(
auckland moving companies September 10, 2011 - 11:35 pm
I agree with Chicago Office Movers, it's getting exceedingly difficult to locate a decent exact match domain (in practically any niche) I think one of the best options is to try and buy expiring domains that are relevant as there are plenty of these

i don't think so long tail keyword is good in building of mini sites only. Long tail keyword is the best for any site . If your key word phases are 3 - 4 words. Its really good keywords for site. But take care about relevancy. Choose keywords with 3-4 words with relevant with your site theme or services.

I've seen a lot of mini sites in my travels and I would agree that a domain that is a match for a search term will rank well. I really wonder about the amount of conversions these mini-sites generate. I've always worked with larger sites that go after a number of niches. I now a lot of people use this strategy. I'll have to give it a try. Nice article!! Thank you!

Most keyword phrases are highly competitive and difficult to rank for because everyone is using them. Regular keyword phrases have the greatest competition. Longtail keywords are generally keyword phrases greater than 3 words. Longtail keywords are word phrases that are becoming more prevalent in online internet marketing. Other keyword phrases are over used and longtail keyword phrases offer an alternative at getting more traffic from words that are not used very much globally. Longtail keywords are valuable but not highly competitive which makes them a great resource to use in website meta tags and article writing. There are longtail keyword generators.
