You’ve probably heard about – and very likely practiced – the technique of visualizing future success as a way of bringing it about. It’s not a magic spell, of course, but it does get your mind headed in the right direction and help to keep you from wandering off course.
Here’s an image I use to make that technique particularly powerful. I call it the Cable to the Future.
First of all, sit somewhere comfortable and deliberately let your body relax – let any tension drain out of it as if it’s evaporating, like mist on a warm road.
Close your eyes and take three deep breaths. With each slow easy breath, just allow your body to relax more and more, and breathe out any tension.
Now we’re going to create a vivid “future memory” of your success. You’re going to watch it from the outside at first. Imagine how it looks when you have achieved your goal. Imagine watching yourself, as if on a movie screen, walking around, talking, doing whatever it is you do, but with that success achieved. Watch how your future self moves and stands and talks and sits, and what is happening around.
Make the scene as vivid and real as you can so that it’s really clear and strong and loud and firm.
Now your future self turns towards you, and you have a hook in your hand on the end of a long cable. You easily cast that hook towards your future self, and your future self catches it and attaches it at the navel.
And the other end of the cable is attached at your navel, and now you’re reeling it in, drawing yourself towards that future. And you’re focused on your future self, but out of your side vision you can see things changing around you as you’re drawn into that positive future.
And when you reach your future self, you and your future self embrace and merge, and you get the feelings and the attitudes and the thoughts that your future self used to get that success, rushing into your own mind. And you’re becoming that successful person in that moment. And you can look around and enjoy how it feels to be that person, and move around and talk and know that you’re successful at your goal.
And you can enjoy that for a while, and then when you’re ready just come back to your usual level of consciousness and open your eyes, but bringing with you the confidence and the attitude of success that you felt as the successful person.
Now go out and live what you’ve just experienced.
