RIP – The Yahoo Directory

When was the last time you used Yahoo search ? Don’t remember…neither do I.

I Google for anything I want and over 90 % of us use Google to search information. But go down memory lane, in mid 90’s Yahoo directory pioneered the system of an online directory.

Yahoo listed all sites and business into a structure where accessibility by users was easy. Anyone having a web page could submit to the directory.

This directory structure also helped build Yahoo’s search engine, as the algo for the search results was based on the online directory structure. This gave Yahoo search an edge over other search engines like Excite, Alta Vista and Infoseek….Until Google came in 1998 and changed search.

Yahoo has shut more than 60 products in the last two years. Today Yahoo announced that come 31 st December 2014 The Yahoo Directory would cease to exist.

Too bad yahoo! didn't do anything to get back in the competition, hope they can do something to get back in the game. I also use Google all the time, Bing's search result is kinda weird.

Hi, That was sad to hear. I only go to yahoo for yahoo answers. Hope they don't shut it down, then I won't have any reason to visit them. Time changes, as long as Google is working to stay on top, it will. I love Google no matter what.
