In 2007 Google came out with Google Webmaster Tools to help webmasters and site owners have better understanding on Google crawl rate and impact on SEO for blogs.
Google webmaster tools is a free SEO tool that can be used by anyone who has a website or blog. All you need to do is verify your blog or website with Google and they’ll give you access to all the information and reporting on the Google spiders crawling your webpages.
Here are a few features of Google Webmaster Tools
1 ) Web Crawl Errors : The Google webmaster tools shows all sorts of errors related to your website and blog. The errors show details of broken links and URLs that are found by Google on your site. Google gives you information on the pages of your site that it can’t crawl due to loading time or a script that it can’t read.
It will also give you a solution to restore the errors. Below is a web screenshot of WebTrafficROI.com on Google Webmaster Tools, it shows the web URL that had issues or were uncrawlable during the Google crawl activity.
The web URL errors were corrected immediately and the Google spider did not detect any more errors during the next crawl. If it was not for the Google Webmaster Tool I would not have known that the blog pages had issues when Google tried to crawl them. This would have impacted my search engine initiatives.
2 ) Set default features : Google gives you the option to choose the kind of features you want for your site in terms of Geographic Targeting ( you can choose the target preference of your country based on your target audience ), domain preference ( www or non-www or both ) and images to show up in Google’s enhanced image search – Google Image Labeler.
3 ) Analyse Meta Descriptions and Title tags : Google will provide a list of URLs that have duplicate title tags or duplicate meta descriptions. It will also show pages with too short or too long title tags and meta tags. Based on the title information you can work on writing effective title tags and meta descriptors that will help Google crawl your blog or site for better search engine ranking.
4) Top Search :Top search queries is an amazing feature, the tool gives you a list of top queries in which your website or blog showed up and the queries from which users reached your site along with the ranking. This will help you know the keywords that rank your site on Google. This can be filtered by type of search ( web, image, mobile ) and by country.
5 ) Enhanced 404 Error pages : Google can provide a bit of JavaScript that can be embed on a 404 error page so that when it loads, Google will try to guess what the user was looking for based on what Google has indexed. These are just some of the features in Google Webmaster Tools that will help you rank high on search engines. If you are not using Google Webmaster Tools , you may want to get an account for your website or blog.
