Blogging: Passion is not enough, you need time

Recently I have come across a number of articles which directly or indirectly inform the readers regarding the bright prospects of blogs, their importance as a source of passive income and the ease with which one can build oneself one of these rich goldmines.

Well, I do not preclude their claims; neither do I have any intention of undermining the great prospect of blogs as income generating avenues. That, however, doesn’t mean that I agree with such articles which in some case may become misleading.

There is a thin line between motivating and deceiving. Especially in the case of blogs, this line is crossed pretty often. Even though, blogs do have the potential to become a healthy source of income, doing so, in no way, is as easy as surfing through a couple of pages.

If you are a businessman, you have to treat the venture like a business, and as the title of this article says “Businesses don’t run just out of passion; they require time”. I am sure that you will agree with me. Passion is great to keep you going, but what if you don’t have enough time to deal with your business?

Here is quick picture of how and where your blog may require your attention for more than just ‘a little time’ to become a successful venture.

Content Development

I believe few would be unaware of the time required to develop quality content for your blog . If you are a blogger yourself, you already know how difficult it can be to produce an original article each time.

Content creation is an art. Even if you have the very best idea, you have to write a super copy so that people really enjoy reading your content while at the same time learning from you.

You have to make sure that you don’t write “me too” kind of articles, but really unique, high quality and useful pieces. All these take a lot of time right from brainstorming for ideas, through researching to clicking the “Publish” button.

Link Building

Unfortunately most of the bloggers take into account only the first work while calculating the time required to manage a blog. I believe that most of those who do that are beginners.

Link building is the second most crucial aspect of any blog and probably the most time taking one. You may be required to devote as much as 1 hour specifically for this job in the beginning.

Comment Management

Did you forget that comments are also a part of your article? You better not do that because for most of the readers that is the majority of the thing that they take away with themselves.

After all, comments are the thing they notice right before leaving and comments are what link readers with the writer. Responding to all the comments and deleting the inappropriate comments or spams can take a heavy time from your schedule each day.

Monetizing

How can we forget the part of business that makes it a business – Money. There is no point of having everything perfect if you don’t place the right kind of ads on the right pages.

There is no point in getting a lot of traffic, if you can not establish yourself as a proficient consultant. And doesn’t matter what you do, it would demand its own time.

There are many other aspects which I haven’t even touched upon in this article but I believe that the above mentioned things are enough to give you a hint of the effort that might be required to manage a blog successfully.

There are many other things related to design , publicity, connections and many other small things which you wouldn’t even consider before starting a blog. So my advice to all those who plan to start their own blogs would be to take the job seriously, if you want to become a successful blogger

Remember, I say it again, passion is just not enough, you still need time to keep things going in the right direction towards success.

You are absolutely right, Jane. I am spending many hours a day and everyday doing all that you have mentioned above. These tasks include writing new content, link building, socializing with other bloggers, and etc. All these require a lot of effort and time! Time is so little... any tips to have 48 hours a day? Haha :)

A blog needs a bit of time before becoming popular and authority. Passion will get you far but you also need time to be successful!

Some people start a blog without realizing how much work it takes to make it successful. A blog will only be successful if you put in the necessary time and make it a priority. A blog needs to be updated on a consistent basis. A few times a week is good, but once a day is ideal. Many people start off strong but then get discouraged. You need to stick with it.

Hey Nick, That's right consistency is the key. But posting daily may not suit everyone, especially for part time bloggers. If they strive to post everyday, they can't hold on to it and later on they will be forced to reduce their frequency. So it is better to start off with a very low frequency and gradually go way up. Thanks for the comment :) Cheers, Jane.
