While running a blog is a lot of work. You start with a great idea, but then you have to come up with consistently engaging topics and content, not to mention all the aspects of managing your site (at the very least, posting articles and replying to comments…and if you’re running a blog like a business, there are a whole host of other issues). It can be extremely time consuming.
And if you own and operate more than one blog, your difficulties will multiply exponentially. So what can you do when you have several blogs and you’re beginning to feel like every waking moment (and some of your sleep time) is devoted to the blogosphere?
1) Get organized. This is absolutely essential to attempting any project that is multi-faceted, and managing multiple blogs is no exception. If you don’t have a regimented schedule laid out to keep you on track, you will quickly find yourself overwhelmed and falling behind. You may not know where to start, but if you can break your day up into segments dedicated to tackling different projects, you’re going to have a much better chance of getting everything done.
2) Come to work prepared. Okay, you work from home, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t adopt a professional attitude. Spend some time at the end of your day preparing a list of topics so that you can get right to work with your writing the following morning. Or schedule in some time to work on your weekly planner so that when you wake up, ready to dig in, you don’t find your most valuable working hours being wasted on prep work.
3) Play to your strengths. You may be a fantastic writer, or perhaps you prefer planning and organization, but you’re probably not good at every aspect of blog management, and you may find yourself dragging your feet on tasks that you consider neither easy nor interesting. If this is the case, you should focus on the items you do particularly well or quickly, and pass the buck on the other aspects of your work. This leads to the next point…
4) Get help. Whether this means hiring an assistant, or a staff, or relaxing your standards and accepting guest posts, you cannot do it all on your own (no matter how independent and manically driven you are). Do not be too proud to admit that you’re in over your head and find someone (or several someones) to relieve the burden. You’ll be happier and the quality of your work will surely improve.
5) Take a break. You are not Wonder Woman! You need to make sure you schedule in some time for yourself to rest, recuperate, and reboot your brain. All work and no play will certainly dull your senses, and it will come through in your blogs. And the minute you start putting out questionable content, your readers will no doubt move on to greener pastures. So set aside some time to take care of yourself, and you’ll return relaxed, refreshed, and ready to blog.
