While it is a free download, you have to sign up for the email newsletter. This is a classic example of giving something away for free in order to build that list. How substantial the offering is will still have to be established though.

There was no focus on this when I was in business school. However, there is a huge focus on ethics, and to always do the right thing. In the case of a screw up, I think the ethical thing for the company to do would be to fess up to its mistakes. Of course it also depends on what the mistake was, the magnitude of the mistake, and its impact on other stakeholders.
