– “Doors are going to close all over the social web. Why? Because the money didn’t  come the way people thought it would.” – Chris Brogan

– “The tipping point has not only *not* been reached, but could still tilt *away* from  Social Media.” – Todd Defren

– “There’s a lot of fixing that needs to be done.” – Jason Falls

– “Dwindling budgets suddenly make low-cost social media look like the pretty girl at the  ball.” – Ann Handley

– “We’re going to develop a set of better metrics to help guide, direct and validate ‘commitment’.” – Joseph Jaffe

– “The movement is rooted in a desire to have quality, not quantity, as people cocoon in the face of the economic crisis.” – Charlene Li

– “After a pre-qualifying wrestling match…” – Ben McConnell

– “These will be cumulative events and interactions that will build brand loyalty for the companies that pay attention to them.” – Scott Monty

– “The recession will force revenue results out of social technologies.” – Jeremiah Owyang

– “Companies that focus on earning love will thrive during hard times, and kick ass when good times return.” – Andy Sernovitz

– “Suddenly, being Facebook friends with your mom will seem less ridiculous than following 4,000 strangers on Twitter.” – Greg Verdino

Some pretty insightful predictions…and some really funny ones too. I think social media will continue to grow in the coming year, and we’ll see several other twitter-esque sites emerge.

Traditional companies that had written down social media as a strategic online marketing tool will have to take a serious look at dominating sites like Twitter, Facebook, Digg etc in 2009

Those are some very good quotes indeed!! Thanks for the post. Social media is definitely not going anywhere in the near future. It would have to have something truly big come in it’s place for it to become obsolete!!

I especially like the quote by David Armano- so many people think that they can just jump on social media and have the money rolling in. It takes not only consistency but good information and determination.

Great quotes!

Brilliant. Thanks for these quotes – glass half-empty as some of them are. But that’s the way of the world nowadays, no surprise if it’s hitting social media as well.

Some great comments, and what an awesome place for Peter to be in, being able to interact with these people. I especially like the quote by Rohit Bhargava, that was is really cool, and very true. It’s never too late in blogging.

O and just a note, you can remove yourself from the top commentator list in your admin. I don’t know if you care or not, but typically people remove their own name.

I’m struggling to see much value in Twitter. So many of the people I subscribe to just are pushing crap or their posts, which I see in RSS anyway. And once you over 25 people or so easy to miss a lot of conversations unless you glue yourself to the screen 24 hours a day.

grate post but here in India, I had said that we will see an unprecedented amount of online debate on the many problems facing India and even specific political parties and candidates. We will also see a serious “get out the vote” campaign to get more young people to go out to vote.
